WV02
About
WV02 is an 807 sq ft (75 m²) master suite designed by DOONT Studio in 2025 for an existing house in Westlake Village, California. The bedroom, the dressing room and the bathroom were three separate rooms with irregular walls between them. The project turns them into one continuous space.
MORE
The existing plan was full of changes of plane, returns and recesses with no use. Rather than correct them one by one, the project lines the room with a single wood-veneered unit that runs from end to end. Some panels are only lining, others hold storage behind them, and one opens as a reading niche. The unit absorbs what is irregular behind it and gives back a single clean line. Here the furniture does the work of the wall.
The bed is a free-standing volume in solid wood. Its headboard extends and becomes a desk, so one piece does two jobs and the room needs no separate table. It sits as the center of the suite, closer to a built element than to a piece of furniture.
The bathroom is not closed off. The vanity, in black-stained wood, separates it from the sleeping area without ending the space, and panels of fluted textured glass filter the view where privacy is needed instead of blocking it. One dark stone floor runs through bedroom, dressing room and bathroom without a threshold, and that is what makes the three read as one.
The list of materials is short: wood veneer, solid wood, pale Venetian stucco on walls and ceilings, dark natural stone underfoot, two stone basins and a free-standing stone tub. The brief followed a trip the client had made to Japan, and the project takes from it the short material list and the low proportions rather than any motif. There is no general lighting: light appears only where a surface or a use calls for it.
